Extended School Year

Effective services beyond the normal school year

Larc School’s Extended School Year (ESY) program provides individualized special education and related services beyond the normal school year, in accordance with student’s IEP. ESY services are usually provided if students are likely to experience significant regression in their skills during the summer break, and/or who will have a difficult time recouping lost skills after the break in September.

Additional considerations include: whether a student has mastered the goals of his or her IEP during the preceding school year; whether a student is on the verge of mastering a critical skill at the end of the school year; and the overall importance of the skills being worked on at the end of the school year and their role in enhancing independence by the time of graduation.

Students with moderate to severe disabilities and developmental/learning delays typically benefit from ESY program services.

The ESY program at Larc provides the same level of academic and therapeutic support that students receive during the regular school year. In addition, activities and community outings are provided that take advantage of the warmer weather and include a dose of summer fun.
