Our Empower Secondary Program Provides Functional Academics, Daily Living Skills, Work Readiness and Community Experience to facilitate transition to adult life.
Larc School’s Empower Secondary Program incorporates the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for children ages 14 to 21. Students learn through a functional academic curriculum as well as opportunities for growth in independence. It incorporates a work readiness program, Community-Based Instruction (CBI), and Adaptive Physical Education (APE), all designed and work together to facilitate transition to adult life.
Social Skills
Social skills teaching focuses on:
- remaining on task,
- following sequential instructions,
- making appropriate eye contact,
- speaking at appropriate volume levels,
- answering personal information questions, and
- exercising politeness when conversing.
Work and Life Skills
Larc provides students ages 14-21 with a Work and Life Skills Curriculum to build skills that will benefit them in their adult lives. The Work and Life Skills Curriculum includes regular community outings, a wide range of activities of daily living, work readiness skills training, and opportunities to learn and use technology in everyday life.
Students have opportunities to learn and perform office tasks like copying, stapling, assembling packets, and delivering mail. Larc has a School Store where secondary students work greeting customers, keeping inventory, handling cash and making change.
Personal Care Skills
Students expand personal hygiene skills with direct instruction. Life skills include what to do in emergencies, selecting appropriate clothing, making a bed, household cleaning, doing laundry, creating shopping lists, cooking simple meals, and more.
